I’m not deleting this account. But I will not be here anymore at all moving forward. (Not a huge difference, for the past year I’ve just been popping on once a month or so.) If you would like to find me elsewhere, please see my pinned post.

"I assume that most of us are doing research because we want to have an impact on the world, and I feel like that impact is diminished if no one knows about it outside of academia." - me!
Replying to @danielladipaola
@danielladipaola and @RaechelWalker's interview with @cfiesler exploring how she uses social media to raise public awareness of tech ethics, AI legislation, and the impact of tech on marginalized communities is out now! doi.org/10.38105/spr.grk6alq…

A few years ago I wrote this set of recs for children's/YA novels to get kids/teens excited about coding. cfiesler.medium.com/novels-t… But also! I would like to recommend two middle grade novels I've read recently that might also encourage kids to think critically about tech 🧵

Finally Heard by Kelly Yang is about the good and bad of social media, with a middle school girl grappling with things like algorithmic rabbit holes, FOMO, and cyberbullying. There's also a teacher in the story who knows about social media research. :) simonandschuster.com/books/F…

Congratulations to Dr. @anamatics for a successful dissertation defense! Not only was it a fascinating examination of creative labor on social media, but it has some great scholarly integration of "enshittification" that I hope to see published soon. :) /cc @doctorow

I’m not at #FAccT2024 (instead on the tail end of a long-planned vacation) but the lead authors of my papers have done great threads explaining the findings. One paper is about fairness for recsys providers (e.g. YouTube creators) and one is about intro AI courses on YouTube. 🧵

I was once starstruck by a writer at an awards event, and after chatting excitedly with him, politely introduced myself to his wife, who was standing next to him. Her name was Michelle Pfeiffer. (Also threads like this are one of the things I miss about Twitter. :) )
I once met a guy at a reception before a panel at the Streisand Center and asked what brought him to the event. He said he was married to Barbra Streisand.

I was trying to decide whether to re-post the long thread on Threads I posted about this today here, but this one is better than mine anyway. :)

This explanation is somehow both way way too simplistic and not simplistic enough. But maybe a good place to start for folks that think LLMs are information retrieval systems… or magic. (Frozen is magic though! ❄️)

BREAKING: President Biden just signed into law a bill that will effectively ban TikTok. We'll keep saying it: This ban directly violates the First Amendment rights of the over 170 million Americans who use the platform.
