Dare to dream fellow Texans.
Texas was built by hope. By people who had no business believing — but believed anyway. To every Texan who’s ever wondered if anyone in power is paying attention: We are taking our state back. Because a little bit of hope is a dangerous thing.

It’s been clear for a long time that Bolsonarism still has a hold in Brazil even with elder Bolsonaro imprisoned. Important warning from @jamesnorth7: On October 25, Brazilians will vote in the second round of their presidential elections. The matter might not be all that suspenseful. The far right-wing candidate, Flávio Bolsonaro, is widely favored to defeat the incumbent, President Lula da Silva, especially after Bolsonaro’s unexpectedly strong showing in the first round, which found both him and the members of his far-right movement broadly in the ascendance. His victory will be a catastrophe for many reasons, but there’s one looming disaster that will extend far beyond Brazil’s borders: The fate of the Amazon rainforest, the world’s largest, hangs in the balance.
#Brazil: Once you have seen the awful consequences of rainforest destruction, you will never forget it. And the Brazilian far-right plans to start burning again. My article @newrepublic. @Revkin @amazonwatch @apagliar newrepublic.com/article/2162…

Probably Sunday's best moment in Texas politics: @CurrentRevolt loses it over how shoddy the work was by the MAGA influencers trying to convince you that Rep Talarico was in a mental hospital: "This story sucks, man...this is shit work, bro... I'm actually upset"

Worth correcting the record on 4 misconceptions in this article: - BAAJA creates MORE exemptions for clean energy than fossil and the certainty provisions WOULD NOT lock in fossil or allow offshore wind style buy-outs. 🧵 (1/12) xitter.cf/jaeporeon/status/21096…

“Ken Paxton has asked for proof of life from me. I’m asking to proof of spine from him.”
I spoke with Rep. James Talarico earlier today in Dallas. I ask him about: -getting the flu -the claim he was getting treatment for a stress-induced episode -a debate update More tonight at 5 and 10 pm.

This I think is an important argument permitting reform if it unlocks more generating capacity that the data centers will reduce their off-grid gas generation.
It’s hard to overstate how much more these companies prioritize speed compared to cost. They would desperately prefer to be on the grid at any cost if they could do it without waiting 5+ years. Off-grid is a failure mode for the hyperscalers.

Seems like they are specific renewables projects Heinrich and others want to see released to be permitted so perhaps as a show of good faith the White House can permit some of them as a down payment in advance of Congressional vote.

This is a good discussion. Some risk that data center operators will balk at paying higher costs to get on the grid. That's why the messaging should be do this now and avoid stranded assets later when regulators take another look at captive gas generation.
Replying to @NateForUtah
Right now data centers build off grid because its faster not because its cheaper. They are willing to spend through the teeth just to get reliable power faster. Problem is current interconnection process is slow + utilities want to build everything themselves to claim profits.

This is the best attempt to answer that question on data center captive generation. The additional costs where data centers have to pay full costs of grid connection (not just incremental) are good. Far-sighted data center owners should be willing to pay to get speed to power.
This is a great question from @DoctorVive! I’m still reading to analyze the data center related provisions myself, and one of my biggest concerns about data centers is the trend of their developers building “behind-the-meter” power generation, which overwhelmingly uses fossil fuels, does so in even worse, dirtier, and less efficient ways than the fossil fuels used by the grid (for example some data centers are self-powering with literal retrofitted jet engines), and “lock in” that fossil fuel pollution for the ENTIRE lifespan of the data center rather than decarbonizing over time if/when a grid’s energy mix adds more renewables. Data centers developers are increasingly engaging in this “behind-the-meter” self-generation strategy, despite it being more expensive for them, because: 1) grids often currently can’t support them joining, they don’t have the spare power to provide such a large customer, they don’t have the transmission to bring it to them, and building all that costs money, which they would have to raise somehow, which directly leads to the concerns about data centers increasing prices of utility ratepayer consumers. 2) building “behind-the-meter” allows data center developers to dodge some (not all) of the veto points available to local communities. So, what we WANT is a set of changes that will: -Incentivize data centers that are built to be powered by the GRID, not Behind-the-Meter, while making them pay for all the costs of that (the BAAJA bill appears to do this) -Disincentivize or ban data centers from using fossil fuels for Behind-the-Meter self-generation (the bill appears to be silent here). BAAJA makes it so that data centers can basically pay enough to build the new power generation and transmission to service them as part of the grid - which is worth it to developers, and better for decarbonization goals longterm.

I think data center owners need to get the message ASAP though that future regulators may not be as kind and that captive generation with gas is not a good look for the sector. Get on the grid now will mean you will get power faster this way but also avoid stranded assets later.

Data center social license to operate must include pay your fair share, don't deplete water resources (don't site in dry areas), improve your compute energy efficiency, and don't do onsite gas generation. Be a good citizen. Look where we are now on public support for the sector.
