Today we publish our latest breakthrough in understanding a question that was first asked over a century ago: why do we store so much fat in our bone marrow, and how does this impact human health?

Finally, Mendelian randomization revealed that increased BMA at the diaphysis and hip is causally associated with osteoporosis. Therefore, decreasing bone marrow fat may be a new therapeutic strategy to prevent and treat this disease.

Exciting news!
Our biobanking WG has just published a new review in @Els_BoneEndo.
This consensus review will help researchers tackle key challenges in isolating and characterizing #bonemarrowadiposetissue and #adipocytes!
Congrats to all authors👏

Our recent large-scale analysis of #BoneMarrowAdiposity in the UK Biobank has been voted as Paper of the Month by @BMA_Society. I'm honoured and delighted that our work has been recognised by this growing research community!

@BMA_society Paper of the Month "Deep learning and genome-wide association meta-analyses of bone marrow adiposity" in @NatureComms! This groundbreaking study uses #deeplearning to study #BMATby combining #GWAS in #MRI of over 48,000 people in the @UKBiobank
It's great to start 2025 with what I think is the most-important paper that my group has published so far: doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-5…
This is the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) for bone marrow adiposity (BMA).

Together, our findings provide insights into BMAT formation and function & provide a basis to study the impact of BMAT on human health and disease (@BMA_Society).
Huge thanks to our funders (including @The_MRC, @TheBHF, @CR_UK, @EdinburghUni) & all who contributed to this work!
I should add that it was a pleasure to work with @NatureComms throughout: very professional editorial & review process, and the attention to detail + policies for data sharing & openness have huge benefits for #ResearchIntegrity. I wish all journals insisted on this.
