"Receiving a gift card for a book series made a meaningful difference in this student’s life. He had been experiencing trouble and making poor choices, but having the opportunity to read books that interested him has given him a positive outlet and something to look forward to. As he becomes more engaged in reading, he began making better choices and showing positive changes in his behavior. Just as importantly, the gift helped him feel that someone believed in him and cared about his future. Knowing that someone took the time to invest in his interests gave him encouragement and a sense of worth. The books became more than something to read; they became a reminder that he was capable of making positive changes and that others believed he could succeed."

"Lily has played the trombone for 3 years in the school marching band. She is practically raising herself. She gets herself to school and comes home alone. Often times, she walks home alone at night after a school football game. Lily needs funds for her marching band uniform and gear. This is required for her to participate in her senior year of high school. The Booster Club will cover the other fees for participation if Lily can get the uniform cost covered." We paid the fees.

"Vera's (11) entire family has received a deportation order and notice to vacate the country by the end of October. The family has maintained protected status for the past few years but are now being removed due to a botched court date. The student's father has already moved back to El Salvador to begin preparing for the rest of the family's arrival. Vera has made great strides to improve her social emotional health over the last two years but now she needs help buying a suitcase, clothing appropriate for the new climate, and simple bedding for when they arrive. Can Alice help her?" We sent a gift card.

"This 11 y/o Muslim girl is very quiet and has begun taking a leadership role in educating her classmates on her religion. She wears a full-length, modest garment and steps aside to drink water privately. She carefully lifts only the fabric necessary to bring the bottle to her mouth, keeping her face and body covered from view as much as possible. Would Alice pay for a water bottle with a long straw to accommodate her drinking water in her garment." Of course.

"The youth is a 15 year old male who is a very respectful and pleasant young man. Unfortunately, he has become the victim of the Opioid crisis in our community. He was recently admitted to substance use treatment in Oregon and is in need of clothing and toiletries. The youth loves his family and values his relationship with his father but he is not working." We gave him a gift card for "appropriate" clothing.

"Rose has a history of childhood trauma and self-harm but she has shown significant improvement lately. Last year she signed up for the Color Guard and she spent much of her summer practicing routines. But this year the fees have gone up and her grandmother cannot afford the $120 fee for costumes and other equipment. Would Alice help?" We paid the fee for Rose.

"Karissa (12) is a non-verbal, wheelchair bound student who uses a communication device. She loves to help cook, and is learning new skills to more actively participate in the cooking process. Karissa would greatly benefit from an adaptive cooking set, montessori knives, a digital scale for measuring (she struggles with measuring cups due to limited mobility), and a whisk with a thick enough handle for her to grasp." We were happy to send a gift card for these items.

"Pascal brought his child to the US in search of a better life. He also wanted to bring his wife to the USA once their child was out of the refugee center where she had been placed at the border. After the child was released, Pascal made plans for his wife to join them in the US but she passed away at the border. When the child learned of her mother's passing, she said, "God took her, and it's okay; I will reunite with her someday." The child needs a book bag, clothing, and school supplies because she is starting school on August 24th." We were happy to pay for the items.

"I am just about to begin classes at George Mason University and I wanted to express my gratitude to you for paying for my yearbook in April. The yearbook holds lots of memories of my journey, and serves as a keepsake for me, and as a low-income student, I thought I wouldn't be able to purchase it. But you guys made it possible. Thank you so much for this generous gift."

"Because of his physical appearance, Chas (10) gets made fun of and has trouble making friends. He understandably lacks confidence and feels badly about himself. Lately, however, he has been participating in an equine, skill based prevention program at our organization. He is flourishing and has truly connected with the horses. His demeanor changes when he is here and he is more open around them. He has done well in the group overall. Would Alice consider paying for some riding lessons?" Absolutely

"Deja (16) was recently put in her aunts house after she witnessed her mother shooting her brother. Still, she is upbeat. She enjoys writing as it is a way to cope with loud noises (she always thinks they're gun shots). We think that noise-cancelling headphones would help her a lot." Done...

"2 years ago, Pascual arrived in the U.S. and he made his middle school’s fishing team and won several trophies. The child just completed his first year of high school but did not do very well in all his classes and had to retake them. I suggested he make time during the day to enjoy his favorite his fishing but his equipment was stolen." We paid for new fishing gear.

"Robert's (7) dad was diagnosed with a brain tumor in September. And they just learned it has spread to his spine. They do not have much money and I know this is an unusual request but I was wondering if Alice would pay for a photographer to take some special pictures of Robert and his dad?" Of course.
