ACUA Ocean and Forssea Robotics have completed three weeks of trials involving the unmanned Pioneer surface vessel and the ARGOS underwater vehicle.
The system conducted more than 40 dives, with all descents, underwater operations and recoveries controlled remotely from shore. The trials included up to eight dive cycles per day, operations in waves of up to 2 m (6.6 ft) and targets at depths exceeding 20 m (66 ft).
The system also inspected the sunken vessel The Poulmic and a concrete block in Cawsand Bay. The trials were conducted under a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA).
According to the companies, the system is now available for commercial marine campaigns, including underwater inspection, maintenance and critical-infrastructure monitoring.
The trials described in the release involved inspection work. No completed underwater repair or other “light underwater work” was reported.

ACUA Ocean and @forssearobotics have completed successful trials off Plymouth, combining USV Pioneer with the 170kg ARGOS remotely operated vehicle.
More than 40 ROV deployments were completed over three weeks, with every launch, dive and recovery commanded remotely from shore. Trials included operations in waves of up to 2m, seabed inspection in more than 20m of water and eight launch-and-recovery cycles in one day.
The work demonstrates how USVs could support subsea infrastructure survey and light intervention, reducing reliance on larger crewed support vessels while cutting cost, fuel use and personnel exposure.

ACUA Ocean and Teledyne FLIR recently partnered on a UKDI funded programme which saw Teledyne FLIR’s SkyCarrier™ UAS platform autonomously launch a SkyRanger® R70 drone, operated remotely from ACUA Ocean’s USV Pioneer — the UK’s first Lloyd’s Register-certified remotely operated uncrewed vessel to deliver a persistent, long-endurance maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platform for Royal Navy and wider UK defence customers.

ACUA has signed a memorandum of understanding with Babcock and Frankenburg Technologies to explore integrating low-cost precision missiles onto uncrewed surface vessels, creating persistent, affordable counter-drone capability for the maritime domain.
The agreement brings together Babcock's multi-domain launcher system, Frankenburg's mass-manufacturable interceptor missiles, and ACUA's Pioneer-class uncrewed surface vessels.
The Pioneer recently operated 16 to 20 nautical miles offshore for more than 100 hours without hands-on intervention. This kind of seakeeping stability makes the concept viable in the rough weather conditions where conventional systems fail.
This partnership could see persistent armed pickets holding station offshore in sea states that normally defeat traditional platforms. The vehicles can be used to protect ships, ports and critical maritime infrastructure against mass drone attacks, closer to the cost of drones themselves.
This crossover of ocean technology serves conservation and sovereignty simultaneously, showing that when you build for the hardest environments at sea, the applications compound.
Congratulations to Neil Tinmouth and the ACUA team.

Offshore operations don’t happen on glassy lake conditions in 1m swells. They require persistence, reliability and stability - vessels that can be fully operational and not just survive in higher sea states.
USV Pioneer is the only uncrewed surface vessel to achieve MCA Workboat Code 3 certification - validating its design, redundancy and capability.
