It’s been six days since this remarkable woman of Indian origin (see her story, attached) won the #NobelPeacePrize. And the Government of India, her ancestral homeland, hasn’t so much as congratulated her?! Shame on the petty men who have made such a deplorable decision.

Has the Government so completely abandoned its duty of accountability that it now relies on detention to silence those who demand it? At Jantar Mantar, young citizens exercising their democratic right to peaceful protest, even while waving the national Tricolour, find themselves in judicial custody. At India Gate, the grieving parents of Ankita Bhandari, seeking justice for their daughter, are detained at 4 in the morning, alongside Congress workers who stood in solidarity with them. A protester is not an offender. A grieving parent is not a threat. The distinction should not need explaining to those entrusted with governing. What threat to public order do peaceful protesters pose? What purpose is served by subjecting bereaved parents, already enduring an unimaginable tragedy, to such indignity? The Constitution does not guarantee citizens the right to protest only when their questions are convenient to those in power. That right is not conditional upon the Government’s approval. Nor can it be restricted merely because its exercise causes discomfort. The power to detain is not the power to silence. The demand for justice does not end at the gates of a police station. Nor does the courage to speak out disappear at the threat of arrest. The people of this country have never needed permission to stand up for what is right. And they must never be made to believe otherwise. @INCIndia

An Egyptian flight attendant, Azza Ramzy, was among those killed in the Houthi attack on Riyadh airport yesterday.

Breaking now: @abhijeet_dipke @SauravDassss @AshutoshRanka have been released after 24 hours in preventive custody. BUT with a condition from magistrate : ‘cannot engage in any activity that would involve a breach of peace for a year..’ NOTE: right to protest peacefully is a fundamental right in our Constitution. Will peaceful protests also be disallowed next??

THINK: A young man loses his grandmother, is reportedly offered by Delhi police to go for last rites (as per police) . BUT fact is, he is still in detention. No clarity on where he is, when he will be released, why was he picked up by the police from an airplane in the first place when he hadn’t broken any law. Doesn’t Abhijit Dipke @abhijeet_dipke and many other young people like him have the same rights as every Indian citizen? 🙏

Mr. Prime Minister, what exactly did you learn? That suppressing democratic rights is an effective tool of governance? If so, you have indeed learned all the wrong lessons.
Personally, the Emergency brings back many memories. As youngsters, we learnt a lot during the anti-Emergency movement.
