ALT ALMA images of the 11 compact planet-forming disks observed in the Lupus star-forming region. Using the highest angular resolution available with ALMA at a wavelength of about 0.9 millimeters, astronomers revealed previously hidden structures in several of these small disks. The lower-right panel shows the orbits of Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, together with the asteroid belt, for scale. The comparison illustrates how these observations probe planet formation at distances comparable to those within our own Solar System. Each white scale bar represents two astronomical units; one astronomical unit is the average distance between Earth and the Sun. Credit: P. Curone et al. – ALMA (ESO/NAOJ/NRAO)

ALT Science image of starburst galaxy NGC 253, as observed by ALMA. A red region represents the lower density carbon monoxide (CO) gas surrounding higher density star-forming regions (stellar nurseries) in yellow.

ALT A grid of 9 images of starburst galaxy NGC 253 with different colors representing different molecular species. In order: molecular gas (blue), shocked regions (red), relatively high-density regions (orange), young starbursts (yellow), developed starbursts (magenta), and molecular gas affected by cosmic-ray ionization (cyan).
